Some lives are shaped by the things that happen to us. Others are shaped by what we decide to do next. This is the story of someone who was given every reason to stop — and kept going.
Where it began
Everything that was set to break me has driven me. Abused as a child, told I'd be dead before my 21st and wouldn't amount to anything in life.
I excelled in college, got the best grades they'd ever had. I was the luckiest person to then be able to go on to my dream job in sports development, teaching the next generation of children how to love sport as much as I did, and still do. I specialised in disability sport, as they were the most inspirational humans I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.
Unfortunately, that true grit and determination to achieve and prove people wrong made my already broken body break completely, leaving me in a wheelchair. I was told my leg would never work again. However, I'm now on crutches for short periods, determined to increase this little by little.
The words it became
They said I'd never make it, I'd be gone before my time, Just another broken story fading from their minds. But every word they threw at me became another flame, I learned that hope grows strongest when the world's calling your name.
Everything that was meant to break me, Only made my spirit strong. I've danced through every storm I've faced, Still singing my own song.
No… it never broke the heart inside.
