After years away from Scotland, he still finds himself longing for the mountains, rain and quiet roads of home.
I've lived away from Scotland for years now.
Life moves on, doesn't it? You work, you build a life, the years pass, and wherever you are eventually becomes normal.
But there are some places that never really leave you.
For me, that's Scotland.
It can be something really small that brings it back. Rain running down a window. A cold morning. The smell of the air. Seeing mountains in the distance. And suddenly, for a few seconds, I'm back there.
I can picture the roads winding through the Highlands. The harbour. Ferries disappearing into the mist. The gulls overhead. Little cottages with lights glowing through the windows when it's getting dark outside.
None of it sounds particularly extraordinary.
But when you've been away long enough, those ordinary things become the things you miss most.
I think that's what homesickness really is.
It isn't necessarily wanting to turn the clock back or wishing your life had been different. It's just knowing there's a place somewhere in the world that still feels like a part of you.
No matter how far away I've travelled or how many years have passed, some part of me never really left Scotland.
It stayed amongst the mountains, the rain, the sea and those quiet roads.
And every now and again, I get that feeling.
I just want to go home.
I watched the rain roll down the glass Somewhere south and far from home Years kept passing one by one Yet part of me never moved on
Take me home Past the dark blue water Back where the mountains breathe And the evening falls slower Take me home To the edge of the old world Where the windows glow warm And the rain sings softly On the earth I still love
Take me home Where the world moves softer And for one quiet night I can finally rest Back home again.
Their story. Their song. Their film.
No matter how far he's travelled, part of him never really left Scotland.
